The riot
police carried out charges in Uden on Wednesday evening against a group of
about two hundred demonstrators, who protested against the arrival of 750
refugees to the municipality of Maashorst. The activists gathered at the
Kruisherenkapel in Uden, where an information evening took place. When the
atmosphere became increasingly grim, the mayor decided to put an end to the
demonstration for the sake of safety.
The evening
was initially fairly quiet, except for a few skirmishes. Some firecrackers were
set off and some activists lit torches. The police were on their feet in large
numbers to keep an eye on the situation. Around nine o'clock the atmosphere
changed. Four vans of the riot police arrived, after which the riot police
pushed the crowd apart. The occasional blow was thrown.
The
activists threw stones, bottles and cans. Heavy fireworks were also set off.
Four or five people have been arrested.
Three
hundred people were present in the Kruisheren Chapel to attend the meeting.
Among them were many concerned residents. The speakers were interrupted by boos
and slogans. Proponents of the arrival of the refugees left prematurely, they
were disappointed and felt shame by the protest.
In a house
fire on the Bennekelstraat in Eindhoven, the police had to intervene on
Wednesday evening because some residents did not want to leave the house. Some
wanted to go back inside to bring things to safety, but that was too dangerous
and therefore not allowed. A fire had broken out in the meter cupboard, near
the hall and the stairs. The fire released a lot of smoke, in a short time the
whole house was full of smoke, just like the neighbors' houses.
An argument
on the A58 near Best attracted the attention of many road users on Thursday
morning. A truck driver was beaten by two men on the hard shoulder. Several
blows were exchanged, a witness saw. The men came from a van that was parked on
the hard shoulder in front of the truck.
The
municipality of Maashorst informed the residents about the three locations that
have been designated for the reception of the refugees. There will be a place
for 500 residents on the Boekelsedijk in Uden, including about 300 asylum
seekers. About 250 residents will be located in the Repelakker expansion
district in Zeeland and about 250 residents in Molenaarstraat in Schaijk.
On Facebook
there were several calls to demonstrate against the arrival of asylum seekers.
In addition
to refugees, starters and emergency seekers will also live in the three places.
The group of people who urgently need housing in Maashorst is larger than just
refugees. That is why the municipality has broadened the search for space for
reception locations for refugees.
The interest
in the information evening about the arrival of the refugees is so great that a
second information evening will be held on April 16.
Chaos at
violent protests in Best
an information meeting about the arrival of a new asylum seekers' centre in
Best got completely out of hand and the mayor was threatened. A group of
seventy demonstrators tried several times to enter the sports hall where the
meeting was held, and violence was used.
