No
breakthrough should be expected in the coalition formation talks between the
PVV, VVD, NSC and BBB on Wednesday, the negotiation leaders said at the end of
Tuesday’s discussions.
“No
definitive agreement has been reached on any of the 12 big issues,” Richard van
Zwol, one of two men steering the talks told reporters, adding that more time
is needed on all of them.
The
deadline for reaching an agreement is just eight days away and “we will have to
use a full stop that day at 23.55,” he said. The talks are “very complicated”
and tension is increasing the closer the deadline comes, Van Zwol said.
The talks
lasted for 10 hours on both Monday and Tuesday and little concrete has emerged
about the most recent progress. On Monday, PVV parliamentarian Gidi Markuszower
was photographed with a document under his arm, which appears to show some of
the main points that have been agreed on.
The A4 page
lists 37 points, including tax cuts from 2025 and the “toughest entry regime
for asylum seekers… ever.” It also mentions a positive future for farming and
fishing, as well as food security.
All four
party leaders have agreed that they will remain in the lower house of
parliament and as yet, little is known about who is likely to be a minister or
who will get the role of prime minister, if a deal is reached ahead of the
deadline.
