‘Restraining order needed’: Trump shares doctored Meloni meme to reignite feud •

US President Donald Trump has reignited his public feud with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni by sharing a doctored meme on Truth Social with the caption "RESTRAINING ORDER NEEDED". The edited image, posted on Sunday, July 5, 2026, alters a genuine photo from the Group of Seven (G7) summit to make Meloni look enamored and smiling upward at Trump, mockingly implying she is obsessed with him.

The escalation comes just ahead of the high-profile NATO summit in Turkey, where both world leaders are scheduled to meet face-to-face.

Origins of the Feud

The public dispute between the two historically ideologically aligned leaders has grown increasingly personal over several underlying issues

  • The G7 Photo Dispute: The recent spat intensified when Trump claimed during an interview that Meloni had repeatedly "begged" him for a photograph during the G7 summit out of desperation. Meloni firmly hit back in a video statement, calling the claim "completely fabricated" and stating, "Neither Italy nor I ever beg".
  • Geopolitical Disagreements: Relations initially soured earlier in the year when Italy refused to allow U.S. military aircraft carrying weapons for the Iran conflict to use a Sicilian airbase without parliamentary approval.
  • Religious and Public Spats: Meloni also publicly criticized Trump for his harsh rebukes of Pope Leo's condemnation of the conflict, which prompted Trump to accuse her of lacking courage.

Recent Developments

While Meloni previously called Trump's unprovoked social media posts "senseless" and told him to focus on his own approval ratings, the Italian government has largely attempted to brush off this latest meme to maintain diplomatic decorum. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto addressed the tension by noting on Sky TG24 that "people come and go but relations must endure"
