Russian
government cheers on Le Pen’s National Rally
Russia’s
foreign ministry has weighed in on the French legislative election, and it’s
not much of a surprise who their favorite candidate is.
“The
people of France are seeking a sovereign foreign policy that serves their
national interests & a break from the dictate of Washington &
Brussels,” Russia’s foreign ministry wrote in a post on X along with a photo of
Marine Le Pen, a leader of the far-right National Rally.
“French
officials won’t be able to ignore these profound shifts in the attitudes of the
vast majority of citizens,” the post quoted the ministry’s deputy spokesperson,
Andrey Nastasin, as saying.
Le Pen’s
party has long had strong ties to Russia. The party has benefitted from a loan
from a Russian bank and has refused to support sanctions against Moscow for the
invasion of Ukraine. In a recent manifesto, the party proposed a closer
“alliance” with Russia and a NATO exit (though it has since deleted those
sections of the online document).
