Hungary’s
football-loving Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has expressed his personal
disappointment with the Hungarian team’s performance at the Euros.
In a clip
posted to Orbán’s TikTok channel from his trip to Kyiv on Wednesday, he told
the Ukrainian coach Serhiy Rebrov: “You did well.”
When Rebrov
responded “you too!” Orbán batted the compliment away. “I was not happy,” Orbán
insisted, “but you did really well because you have really good quality
players! Congratulations!”
Both teams
were eliminated in the group stages of the tournament.
Hungary
finished third in its group behind Germany and Switzerland, but ahead of
Scotland. It pulled off a dramatic 1-0 win over the Scots, but that wasn’t
enough to secure a place in the last 16. After the team went undefeated in
2023, the enthusiastic prime minister’s hopes had been high.
Orbán said
it was just unfortunate that Ukraine finished bottom of its group against
Romania, Belgium and Slovakia. “It was just bad luck, nothing else, but you did
very well!”
“How is your
life?” Orbán asked Rebrov, who replied: “After Hungary, yes, it’s hard.” Rebrov
previously coached Hungarian top club Ferencváros between 2018 and 2021, and
has been in charge of the Ukrainian national team since last year.
