Robinson islam debate oxford union
The
controversial Oxford Union debate featuring far-right activist Tommy
Robinson (Stephen Yaxley-Lennon) took place on Wednesday, June 17, 2026,
where the motion was narrowly defeated 33–30.
The
Debate and Outcome
- The Motion: The debate centered on the
heavily criticized proposition, "This House believes the West is
right to be suspicious of Islam".
- The Lineup: Robinson argued in favor of
the motion alongside fellow far-right campaigner Laurence Fox and
journalist Jonathan Sacerdoti. They were opposed by former Conservative MP
Jacob Rees-Mogg, podcaster Michael Doward, and activist Abdullah al
Andalusi.
- The Result: The motion failed to pass. In
the debating chamber, Robinson was roundly defeated after a forceful
opposition speech by Oxford Union President Arwa Elrayess.
Mass
Protests and "Half-Empty" Chamber
- Blockades: Around 200 anti-fascist
demonstrators organized by Oxford Stand Up To Racism blockaded both ends of St
Michael's Street.
- Disruption: Protesters successfully
blocked entrances, preventing many ticketed Union members and speakers
from accessing the venue.
- Attendance: Because of the intense
blockades, the historic chamber was left mostly empty, with only about 60
people making it inside to watch the debate.
- Entry Suspended: Organizers ultimately
suspended entry entirely due to safety concerns, sparking a secondary row
over whether the Union prioritized the protesters over its own paying
members.
Backlash
and Arrests
- Widespread Condemnation: Leading up to the event, faith
leaders like the Bishop of Oxford, Steven Croft, and Imam Monawar Hussain,
strongly urged the Union to withdraw the "untimely and divisive"
invitation. Local MP Anneliese Dodds similarly criticized the Union for
providing a "loudspeaker" to the far-right.
- Clashes & Policing: A smaller group of Robinson
supporters carrying Union flags counter-protested. Thick lines of Thames
Valley Police kept the opposing sides separated. A 20-year-old man was
arrested on suspicion of assault.
- Financial Fallout: Following the chaos, local
city council leaders demanded that the independent Oxford
Union cover the full financial burden of the massive event policing
bill, which reportedly neared £80,000
