An
explosion went off on Friday night outside a Jewish school in Buitenveldert in
Amsterdam causing limited damage, according to Dutch police.
Amsterdam
mayor Femke Halsema called it a “cowardly act of aggression towards the Jewish
community” and part of an “unacceptable” rise in anti-semitism.
A
statement from the mayor, head of police and chief prosecutor, sent at 7am on
Saturday, said the “targeted attack against the Jewish community” was
apparently the effort of a single antagonist and that they are examining video
images.
There was another explosion at a Belgian synagogue on Sunday night and one at a synagogue in Rotterdam on Thursday night, with no injuries. Dutch police have arrested four young men from Tilburg in connection with the Rotterdam explosion.
Amsterdam’s
Jewish schools have for some time been under heightened surveillance. “A school
should be a place where children can take their lessons in safety,” said
Halsema in the statement. “Amsterdam must be a place where Jewish people can
live safely.”

Reuters
has reported further details on the explosion that damaged a Jewish school in
Amsterdam early on Saturday:
The
explosion happened in an upscale residential neighbourhood on the south side of
Amsterdam, and caused limited damage. No injuries were reported.
Security
at synagogues and Jewish institutions in the Dutch capital had already been
heightened after an overnight arson attack at a synagogue in the centre of
Rotterdam on Friday.
In
neighbouring Belgium, an explosion caused a fire at a synagogue in Liege on
Monday.
Amsterdam’s
mayor Femke Halsema said the attack was “a cowardly act of aggression against
the Jewish community”.
“Jewish
people in Amsterdam are increasingly confronted with antisemitism. This is
unacceptable,” she said.
