Marine Le
Pen’s National Rally (RN) is using the March 2026 municipal elections as a
critical strategic "launchpad" to build momentum and local legitimacy
ahead of the 2027 French presidential election.
The
party’s strategy centers on three primary objectives:
Expanding
Local Governance: The RN aims to move beyond its traditional stronghold of
Perpignan (the only city of over 100,000 inhabitants it currently controls) by
fielding a record 650 candidate lists.
Creating
a "Blueprint" for Power: Key figures like Perpignan Mayor Louis Aliot
are positioning their local administrations as "laboratories" for RN
governance, focusing on security and "order" to prove the party is
"ready to govern" at a national level.
Building
a Senatorial Base: By winning more municipal seats, the RN hopes to expand its
influence in the French Senate, where the electoral college is composed largely
of local officials.
The 2027
Presidential Context
While the
local elections serve as a bellwether, Le Pen’s own 2027 bid remains under a
legal cloud:
Legal
Hurdles: Le Pen is currently appealing an embezzlement conviction that includes
a five-year ban from public office. A final ruling from the Court of Appeal is
expected by the summer of 2026.
Contingency
Plans: If the ban is upheld, Le Pen has signaled that party president Jordan
Bardella is prepared to step in as the RN's presidential candidate.
Polling
Strength: Despite these challenges, the RN continues to poll strongly, with
both Le Pen and Bardella recently drawing over 30% of voting intentions for the
first round of a 2027 race
