Netanyahu seeks to appease Trump with latest Iran remarks to the press

In a press conference on March 19, 2026, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made several statements aimed at aligning with U.S. President Donald Trump and diffusing growing friction between the two allies regarding the ongoing war with Iran.

Key Remarks to "Appease" Trump

Denial of Influence: Netanyahu dismissed reports that Israel had "dragged" the U.S. into the conflict as "fake news," asserting that Trump makes independent decisions based on American interests. He famously asked, "Does anyone really think that someone can tell President Trump what to do?".

Compliance on Energy Strikes: Following Trump's public claim that he "knew nothing" about a recent Israeli strike on Iran's South Pars gas field, Netanyahu confirmed that Israel "acted alone" in that specific operation. He explicitly stated that Israel would now "hold off" on further attacks on Iranian energy infrastructure at Trump’s request.

Strategic Alignment: He praised the "unprecedented" collaboration between himself and Trump, claiming they are "fully aligned" on the need to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Reported Status of Iran's Capabilities

Netanyahu used the address to declare significant military milestones in the 20-day conflict:

Uranium Enrichment: He claimed Iran currently has "no ability to enrich uranium," though the IAEA has expressed skepticism regarding this claim.

Missile Production: He asserted that Iran’s industrial base for manufacturing ballistic missiles has been "decimated".

Naval Status: He stated that the combined U.S. and Israeli forces have destroyed Iran’s entire naval fleet in the Caspian Sea.

Divergent Strategy on "Ground Component"

Despite the public display of unity, a strategic rift remains:

Netanyahu's View: He suggested that a "ground component" may be necessary to achieve regime change, noting that "revolutions do not happen from the air".

Trump's Stance: Conversely, Trump has stated he has "no plans" to put American boots on the ground and has asked the Pentagon for $200 billion to continue the air-focused campaign.
