Social
Nuisance and Safety problems around bulb roof in Utrecht
The
'Bollendak' on the Stationsplein at Utrecht Central Station is an important
passageway, but since 2022 it has been struggling with persistent problems in
terms of social nuisance and insecurity. The situation is described as grim,
with a concentration of incidents in this particular area.
Social
nuisance and crime
Groups
and incidents: Since the spring of 2025, groups of young people in particular,
including 'veiliglanders' (asylum seekers from safe countries), have been
causing serious nuisance.
Nature of
the problem: It concerns intimidation of passers-by, drug trafficking,
pickpocketing and fights.
Relocation:
Intensive intervention by the police and enforcement sometimes causes the group
to move to other locations in the city center, such as the Mariaplaats.
Escalation:
Employees of catering establishments under the roof report a grim atmosphere
and violence.
Intensive
surveillance: There are continuous couples of police and enforcement (boas)
present under the Bollendak.
Denial of
residence: The municipality uses a large area of residence exclusion to keep
out nuisance offenders.
Cooperation:
There is cooperation with agencies responsible for the reception of (minor)
asylum seekers.
Call for
a structural approach: Political parties (such as VVD Utrecht) argue for a
permanent police post and faster deportation of nuisance asylum seekers.
