I was
right: Meloni says Trump tariffs U-turn fruit of ‘dialogue’
Italian
PM Giorgia Meloni has welcomed this evening’s announcement by U.S. President
Donald Trump that he won’t be imposing tariffs on eight European countries as
of Feb. 1, and said Italy had been right to call for dialogue rather than
retaliation against Washington.
“As Italy
always said, it is essential to continue to promote dialogue between allied
nations,” Meloni wrote on social media. Earlier, speaking to Italian public
broadcaster RAI, the Italian leader signaled Rome was “interested” in Trump’s
“Board of Peace” plan for administering Gaza, but said Italy couldn’t join
immediately due to constitutional restraints.

Europeans
on Trump’s change of heart: Promising, but just a start
Just
because Donald Trump posted about it doesn’t make it true.
That’s
the message from a senior EU official: “I would be skeptical about calling this
fantastic news,” they told Gabriel Gavin. “We can’t live our lives or govern
our countries based on social media posts.”
As if to
confirm that caution, it looks as if tomorrow’s hastily arranged meeting to
discuss Trump’s threats will be going ahead regardless. “A lot has happened
since the start of the year,” the official said. “It’s a good idea for these
leaders to sit together and discuss the [volatile] world we live in.”

Huge win
for Rutte
A deal on
Greenland would a be a massive win for NATO chief Mark Rutte. Donald Trump’s
announcement directly referenced the alliance’s secretary-general, implying he
had played a critical part in mediating a solution over the Arctic territory.
That
means Rutte’s strategy — lavishing praise on Trump in public while working
feverishly behind the scenes with leaders to find a path forward — will have
ultimately paid off.
“Mark
Rutte is doing his job: being listened to by the President of the United
States,” said one NATO diplomat.

This
won’t be forgotten
Despite
Trump apparently rowing back his demands that the U.S. should own Greenland,
the damage to relations between Washington and Brussels in 2026 is huge.
“I think
his speech earlier today will give food for thought in most if not all
capitals. Tariffs or not,” said an EU diplomat.

Stubb
called it
Finnish
President Alexander Stubb must be feeling pretty vindicated right now. At a
panel on European security this afternoon that included Rutte, Stubb was asked:
“Who or what can defuse the tensions over Greenland?”
“Oh, Mark
Rutte,” he replied, triggering laughter in the room and among the panel
participants.
“Thank
you, Alex,” Rutte said with a grin.

Deal on
Greenland, says Trump
U.S.
President Donald Trump has announced on Truth Social that he and NATO chief
Mark Rutte have formed a framework on a future deal on Greenland.
In the
post, Trump canceled the tariffs that he’d said he would impose on eight
European countries from Feb. 1. There’ll be further discussions on security.
