"Falso". Eurodeputada Isabel Santos nega envolvimento no 'Qatargate'

Depois de o
jornal Inevitável ter avançado que a eurodeputada socialista Isabel Santos
estaria envolvida no 'Qatargate', o caso de corrupção que tem abalado a
Parlamento Europeu, a eurodeputada socialista nega o envolvimento nos apoios à
Organização Não Governamental (ONG) de Panzeroti.
"Quanto à
minha ligação à Fight Impunity, reafirmo que apenas fiz parte do quadro de
honra dessa associação, no qual figuravam Denis Mukwege, Prémio Nobel da Paz
2018; Bernard Cazeneuve, ex-Primeiro-Ministro de França; Emma Bonino,
ex-Comissária Europeia; Frederica Mogherini, ex-Comissária Europeia, entre
outras personalidades de reconhecido prestígio e serviço público", lê-se
no comunicado enviado por Isabel dos Santos, a que o Notícias ao Minuto teve
acesso.
Segundo a eurodeputada
"é completamente falso que tenha avalizado, apoiado ou incentivado
financiamento seja a que organização for nomeadamente à associação em
causa", acrescentando que "além disso, tanto quanto é do meu
conhecimento, o Parlamento Europeu não atribuiu qualquer verba à Fight
Impunity".
Após ter tomado
conhecimento pela imprensa do envolvimento do Presidente da Fight Impunity num
caso de presumível corrupção em investigação pelas autoridades judiciais,
Isabel dos Santos esclarece ainda que pediu "na manhã do dia 11 de
Dezembro a saída do referido quadro de honra e a respetiva retirada do site da
organização", tal como já tinha sido avançado pelo Público.
"No que diz
especificamente respeito ao projeto-piloto de criação de um observatório de
combate à impunidade, tanto quanto é do meu conhecimento ainda não foram sequer
abertas candidaturas pela Comissão Europeia para a implementação do aludido
projeto e por isso não poderia ter sido atribuído qualquer financiamento, fosse
a que organização fosse", informou ainda a eurodeputada socialista.
A presidente do
Parlamento Europeu, Von der Leyen, já garantiu que os serviços da Comissão
"estão a verificar o registo de transparência, em que são publicadas todas
as reuniões de membros do colégio e membros dos seus gabinetes com
representantes de grupos de interesses", para se certificarem de que a
onda de choque não atinge o executivo comunitário e garantir que os contactos
com o Qatar não são suspeitos.
A presidente
admitiu que mesmo a Comissão Europeia mantém contactos regulares com o Qatar
para tratar de "questões globais, como as alterações climáticas, [...]
questões regionais, como a paz e estabilidade no Afeganistão e no Médio
Oriente, e em questões bilaterais, como a diversificação [energética], para nos
afastarmos da Rússia e dos combustíveis fósseis russos".
O caso de Eva
Kaili, que está desde 11 de dezembro em prisão preventiva, acusada de
"corrupção, lavagem de dinheiro e de participar numa organização
criminosa" com ligação ao Qatar, vem colocar o Parlamento Europeu perante
o imperativo de rever os seus códigos de conduta.

After the newspaper
Inevitable said that Socialist MEP Isabel Santos would be involved in
'Qatargate', the corruption case that has shaken the European Parliament, the
Socialist MEP denies involvement in supporting panzeroti's Non-Governmental
Organisation (NGO).
"As for my
connection to Fight Impunity, I reaffirm that I was only part of the honour
board of that association, which included Denis Mukwege, Nobel Peace Prize
2018; Bernard Cazeneuve, former Prime Minister of France; Emma Bonino, former
European Commissioner; Frederica Mogherini, former European Commissioner, among
other personalities of recognized prestige and public service", reads the
statement sent by Isabel dos Santos, to which Notícias ao Minuto had access.
According to the
MEP ,"it is completely false that it has endorsed, supported or encouraged
funding to any organisation in particular to the association concerned",
adding that "moreover, to my knowledge, the European Parliament has not
allocated any money to Fight Impunity".
After being aware
by the press of the involvement of the President of Fight Impunity in a case of
alleged corruption in investigation by the judicial authorities, Isabel dos
Santos also clarifies that he asked "on the morning of December 11 to
leave the said honor board and the removal of the organization's website",
as had already been advanced by the Public.
"With regard
specifically to the pilot project to set up an observatory to combat impunity,
as far as I am aware, applications have not even been opened by the European Commission
for the implementation of the aforementioned project and therefore no funding
could have been allocated, no matter what organisation it was," the
Socialist MEP said.
The President of
the European Parliament, Von der Leyen, has already assured that the Commission
services "are checking the transparency register, in which all meetings of
members of the college and members of their offices with representatives of
interest groups are published", to make sure that the shock wave does not
reach the Community executive and to ensure that contacts with Qatar are not
suspicious.
She admitted that
even the European Commission maintains regular contacts with Qatar to address
"global issues such as climate change, [...] regional issues, such as
peace and stability in Afghanistan and the Middle East, and on bilateral issues
such as [energy] diversification, to move away from Russia and Russian fossil
fuels."
The case of Eva
Kaili, who has been in custody since 11 December, accused of "corruption,
money laundering and participating in a criminal organisation" linked to
Qatar, puts the European Parliament before the imperative to review its codes
of conduct.
