EU to
pause countermeasures for 90 days
Newsflash:
The European Union has paused its new tariffs against the US for 90 days, to
allow time for negotiations with Donald Trump.
This
follows Trump’s decision last night to cut the tariffs on countries who hadn’t
retaliated against his first wave of trade levies, to 10%.
Ursula
von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, has posted:
We took
note of the announcement by President Trump.
We want
to give negotiations a chance.
While
finalising the adoption of the EU countermeasures that saw strong support from
our Member States, we will put them on hold for 90 days.
If
negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will kick in.
Preparatory work on further countermeasures continues. As I have said before,
all options remain on the table.
The EC’s
retaliatory response to Trump was agreed yesterday, and focused on €21bn
(£18bn) of US goods, from almonds to yachts
