Hours
earlier, the government’s far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir
threatened to resign from the government if the deal was approved. In a
televised statement he said:
“The deal
that is taking shape is a reckless deal,” adding that it would “erase the
achievements of the war” by releasing hundreds of Palestinian militants and
withdrawing from strategic areas in Gaza.
“If this
irresponsible deal is approved and implemented, we the members of Jewish Power
will submit letters of resignation to the prime minister,” he said.
In a post
on X he added that the deal “endangers Israel’s security” and “constitutes a
complete victory for Hamas”.
Ben-Gvir
has himself been convicted of backing a group considered by both Israel and the
US to be a terrorist organisation as well as racist incitement against Arabs.
