During the period between the evening of Friday, July 2, and Monday, July 5, there were 500+ reported shootings across the U.S., including more than a dozen mass shootings, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

At least 233 people died by gun violence throughout the weekend, per GVA. According to the org, there were 23 mass shootings in the country during the first 5 days of July 2021. In June, President Joe Biden directed his Justice Department to explore numerous steps to try and curb gun violence.

'Crime historically rises during the summer, and as we emerge from this pandemic, with the country opening back up again, the traditional summer spike may even be more pronounced than it usually would be,' Biden said on June 23. He continued, 'I've been at this a long time, and there are things we know that work that reduce gun violence and violent crime, and things that we don't know about.'

The president announced a 'major crackdown to stem the flow of guns used to commit violent crimes. It is zero tolerance for gun dealers who willfully violate key existing laws and regulations.'

He added, 'If you willfully sell a gun to someone who is prohibited from possessing it, if you willfully fail to run a background check, if you willfully falsify a record, if you willfully fail to cooperate with the tracing requests or inspections, my message to you is this: We'll find you, and we will seek your license to sell guns.'
