‘Shadow President’: Elon Musk Sworn in Beside
Trump in New Yorker Inauguration Cover

President-elect Donald Trump is sidelined as Elon Musk
steals the spotlight in the New Yorker’s official inauguration day cover, which
was revealed on Friday by the publication.
The biting portrayal is the work of cartoonist Barry Blitt,
who called the drawing “Two’s a Crowd” in a mocking jibe that highlights Musk’s
centerstage profile on Team Trump.
In the artwork, which jokingly shows the pair being sworn in
to office together, a grinning Musk is shown in full while Trump is only partly
visible, reduced to a dash of yellow hair and red tie.
“On January 20, 2025, the next leader of the United
States—and of the free world—assumes power,” Blitt said of the cover, adding:
“Also on that day Donald Trump is sworn in.”
The cover plays on the relationship dynamic between Trump
and the immensely powerful Musk, which has been closely scrutinized by those in
politics and media, particularly in terms of how their individual ambitions and
public personas might interact once the president-elect takes office.
Already there have been instances where Musk has appeared to
operate independently. Last month, Musk got ahead of Trump by trying to crush
House Speaker Mike Johnson’s stopgap bill to fund the government in a move that
sowed chaos. The whole incident prompted multiple Democrats to refer to him as
“President Musk” – an idea that Blitt seems only too happy to play with.
