Woke

O movimento woke tem vindo a acentuar um tom prosélito, numa auto-atribuída superioridade moral, como se quisesse inscrever no terreno comum uma nova liturgia.

Escreveu o poeta Paul Valéry, e faz muito sentido: “A melhor forma de concretizar os nossos sonhos é acordar.”

 

No 12.º ano, eu e um grupo de colegas tínhamos o hábito de estudar e dormir em casa uns dos outros. Com o tempo, começámos a evitar a casa do Luís porque a mãe deste nosso colega, uma mulher enérgica, tinha por hábito acordar-nos de supetão: entrava no quarto, abria as persianas e gritava: “Vamos lá a acordar!” Se não saltássemos da cama, regressava daí a um minuto e batia palmas, perguntando-nos se queríamos chumbar o ano.

 

Já a mãe do nosso colega João abria a porta e dizia “Bom dia, são oito e meia”. Passados dez minutos regressava, recordando-nos as horas. Se ainda assim não nos levantássemos, nos dez minutos seguintes lançava o argumento final: “Quanto mais tempo ficarem na cama, menos tempo têm para o pequeno-almoço”, fazendo com que o prazer de comer se sobrepusesse ao prazer de dormir. Era uma aproximação empática e intervalada, o que fez com que a casa do João passasse a ser o destino preferido do grupo. Tenho vindo a recordar-me da mãe do meu colega a propósito da cultura woke, que tanto nos quer acordar para a vida.

 

Em 1938, o cantor negro americano Lead Belly, a propósito da sua música Scottsboro boys, sobre nove rapazes negros falsamente acusados de violarem duas mulheres brancas, alerta a comunidade negra: “É melhor ficarem acordados (stay awake), manterem os olhos bem abertos.” Na luta contra o racismo nos EUA, a expressão torna-se recorrente, até à criação do movimento Black Lives Matter, que, em 2013, adopta o mote stay awake no Black Twitter. Mais tarde é abreviado para woke (acordado) e estende-se a outras causas, como feminismo, questões de género ou crítica ao capitalismo.

 

Nada contra, não fosse o facto de o movimento woke ter vindo a acentuar um tom prosélito, numa auto-atribuída superioridade moral, como se quisesse inscrever no terreno comum uma nova liturgia ou uma espécie de Olimpíadas do mais arregalado. Nas artes, a cultura woke reduz todo e qualquer objecto não alinhado com o seu ideário crítico a coisa alienada e alienante. É um movimento sisudo e pouco generoso, nada empático, que se dá ao luxo de não perder tempo a explicar-se aos outros. Insiste, de minuto a minuto, em nos acordar sem dó nem piedade e sem olhar à realidade existencial — e onírica — de cada um.

 

Por outro lado, num sério erro de percepção, ignora que parte importante da liberdade em que hoje vivemos foi alcançada num diálogo dinâmico entre sensibilidades de esquerda e direita democráticas. A atitude woke torna-se assim rígida, opressiva, caminhando lado a lado com o que se propõe combater. Ainda que de forma involuntária, acaba por contribuir para um esvaziamento dos valores substanciais da esquerda, que a direita, por sua vez, se encarrega de arrumar num devir totalitário. E todos ficamos a perder.

 

Nos últimos anos, o movimento tornou-se facilmente atacável — e até risível. O anúncio Levi’s Wokes do programa de humor Saturday Night Live, de 2019, é disso bom exemplo. As calças que publicita são ridículas, mas estão de acordo com os preceitos woke: “Sem tamanho fixo, neutras em termos de estilo e de género, para uma geração que desafia rótulos.”

 

Não questiono a necessidade de lutar com todas as nossas forças para corrigir as injustiças e assimetrias do mundo, mas acredito que a cultura woke, em querendo manter-se no interior do jogo democrático, vai ter de aprender a fazer snooze, como a mãe do João, que nos acordava de forma incremental, e eficaz.

Wrote the poet Paul Valéry, and it makes a lot of sense: "The best way to make our dreams come true is to wake up."

 

In year 12, me and a group of colleagues had a habit of studying and sleeping at each other's homes. Over time, we began to avoid Luis' house because the mother of our colleague, an energetic woman, had a habit of waking us up: she would come into the room, open the shutters and shout, "Let's wake up!" If we didn't jump out of bed, I'd come back a minute from there and clap, wondering if we wanted to go through the year.

 

Our colleague John's mother opened the door and said, "Good morning, it's 8:30." Ten minutes later, he'd come back, reminding us of the time. If we still didn't get up, in the next ten minutes i would make the final argument: "The longer you stay in bed, the less time you have for breakfast", making the pleasure of eating overlap with the pleasure of sleeping. It was an empathetic and intervalapproach, which made John's house become the group's favorite destination. I have been remembering my colleague's mother on the subject of woke culture, who wants to wake us up for life.

In the fight against racism in the USA, the expression becomes recurrent until the creation of the Black Lives Matter movement, which in 2013 adopted the motto stay awake on Black Twitter. It is later abbreviated to woke (agreed) and extends to other causes such as feminism, gender issues or criticism of capitalism.

 

Nothing against, were it the fact that the woke movement had been accentuating a proselyte tone, in a self-attributed moral superiority, as if it wanted to inscribe in the common ground a new liturgy or a kind of Olympics of the most wide." In the arts, woke culture reduces any and all objects not aligned with its critical ideary to the alienated and alienating thing. It is a sisudo and ungenerous movement, nothing empathetic, that gives the luxury of not wasting time explaining itself to others. He insists, from minute to minute, on waking us up mercilessly and without looking at the existential reality — and dreamlike — of each one.

 

On the other hand, in a serious error of perception, it ignores the important part of the freedom in which we live today has been achieved in a dynamic dialogue between democratic left and right sensibilities. The attitude woke becomes thus rigid, oppressive, walking side by side with what is proposed to combat. Although involuntarily, it ends up contributing to an emptying of the substantial values of the left, which the right, in turn, is in charge of arranging in a totalitarian devir. And we all lose.

 

In recent years, the movement has become easily attackable —and even rifeable. Levi's Wokes' announcement of the 2019 comedy show Saturday Night Live is a good example. The pants he advertises are ridiculous, but they are in accordance with the precepts woke: "No fixed size, gender-neutral, for a generation that challenges labels."

 

I do not question the need to fight with all our strength to correct the injustices and asymmetries of the world, but I believe that the woke culture, in wanting to remain within the democratic game, will have to learn to make snooze, like John's mother, who woke us up incrementally and effectively.
