Top Greek lawmaker Eva Kaili has lost her job as vice president of the European Parliament after MEPs voted to oust her. She is the biggest name to be charged in a snowballing inquiry into allegations that World Cup host Qatar paid for influence in Europe. The investigation is gathering pace, with more police raids on offices and homes yielding €1.5 million in cash.

The scandal is turning into a major test of accountability for the European Parliament. Much attention is being focused on MEPs and other officials who praised Qatar for labor reforms rather than condemning the Gulf emirate over workers’ rights and dangerous conditions during stadium construction.

Kaili denies wrongdoing. She is due in court on Wednesday. Qatar denies any involvement.
