Ukrainian and Russian officials expressed
optimism that they would make progress in peace talks Monday, even in the wake
of a Russian airstrike a few miles from NATO’s doorstep that killed at least 35
people and deepened fears that the war in Ukraine could spread.
Mykhailo Podolyak, a Ukrainian presidential
adviser and a member of Kyiv’s delegation, said Russia “is much more sensitive
to Ukraine’s position” in a Telegram video Sunday. The Kremlin said it would
not rule out the possibility of a meeting between President Vladimir V. Putin
and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky.
U.S. officials said Russia asked China for
military equipment and economic support for the war in Ukraine after the
invasion began last month, but it was unclear how China responded.
