President
Trump’s ultimatum comes after Iranian missiles struck two cities in southern
Israel, including one near the country’s main nuclear research center.
On
Saturday, March 21, 2026, Iranian ballistic missiles struck the southern
Israeli cities of Dimona and Arad, marking a significant escalation in the
ongoing conflict. Following these attacks, President Donald Trump issued a
48-hour ultimatum to Iran, threatening to "obliterate" its power
plants if the Strait of Hormuz is not fully reopened to global oil trade.
Missile
Strikes in Southern Israel
The
strikes hit two major communities in the Negev desert, resulting in
approximately 100 injuries and extensive property damage.
Dimona:
Home to the Negev Nuclear Research Center, Israel's primary nuclear facility.
While the city was hit directly, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
reported no indication of damage to the reactor or abnormal radiation levels.
Arad: A
state of emergency was declared after a direct hit damaged at least 10
apartment buildings, leaving several in danger of collapse.
Defense
Failure: The Israeli military confirmed that its air defense systems failed to
intercept the missiles, the first time Iranian projectiles have penetrated the
defenses protecting the nuclear site.
The Trump
Ultimatum
While
spending the weekend at his home in Florida, President Trump issued the
following via social media:
48-Hour
Deadline: Iran has until roughly Monday, March 23, to reopen the Strait of
Hormuz.
Energy
Infrastructure Targets: If the waterway remains closed, Trump warned the U.S.
would destroy "various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE
FIRST!".
Economic
Context: The ultimatum comes as soaring oil prices and the total halt of tanker
traffic through the strait have placed increasing pressure on the U.S.
administration.
Retaliatory
Escalation
Iran
stated the attacks were a "response" to a strike earlier that day on
its own Natanz nuclear enrichment site. In the early hours of Sunday, March 22,
the Israeli military announced it had begun conducting retaliatory strikes in
Tehran
