Trump claims
he ‘didn’t guarantee’ no US wars.
President
Donald Trump recently denied that he ever promised to keep the United States
out of new conflicts, a comment made while defending the ongoing U.S.-Iran war
that his administration launched.
What
Trump Said
In a June 7, 2026, interview on NBC's Meet the Press, host Kristen
Welker pressed the President on his central 2024 campaign promise that he would
not involve the U.S. in new wars. Trump rejected the idea that the Iran
conflict contradicted his platform, stating:
"First
of all, I didn't guarantee no war. Why would I have built the strongest
military in the world?"
When Welker
pointed out his repeated statements of "no new wars," Trump added:
"When
you say I promised, I didn't promise anything. I don't like these endless wars.
This is not an endless war."
The
Campaign Record
Fact-checking organizations, including CNN and BBC Verify,
have noted that his NBC statements sharply contradict his 2024 campaign trail
rhetoric. During his run for the White House, Trump frequently boasted that he
had no wars in his first term, and made statements such as: [1]
- "I'm not going to start a
war. I'm going to stop wars," during his November 2024 victory speech.
- "Under Trump, we will have
no more wars, no more disruptions, and we will have prosperity and peace
for all,"
at an August 2024 rally in Pennsylvania.
Context
of the Current Conflict
The interview took place as the U.S. fought a war with Iran that began on
February 28, 2026. Trump's decision to launch the conflict without
Congressional approval drew bipartisan friction, and the House of
Representatives subsequently passed a resolution to limit his military
authority. Trump defended the Iran operation, arguing that military action was
necessary to stop Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, and predicted the
conflict would be resolved soon
