US and Iran
exchange strikes as Israel intensifies attacks on southern Lebanon
The
United States and Iran have exchanged direct military strikes amid a massive escalation of Israeli
ground and air operations in southern Lebanon, threatening to completely
collapse a fragile, April-negotiated ceasefire.
The
US-Iran Conflict Escalation
- US Drone Site Strikes: According to The Guardian, US Central Command forces carried out
"self-defense" strikes inside southern Iran, destroying four
one-way attack drones near the Strait of Hormuz and bombing a ground
control station in Bandar Abbas.
- Iranian Retaliation: In response to the US strikes,
Iranian forces launched a retaliatory attack targeting an American airbase
in Kuwait.
- Strait of Hormuz Blockade: The Islamic Revolutionary Guard
Corps (IRGC) continues to block hostile vessels from transiting the
Strait, while US President Donald Trump stated that any final peace deal
must ensure the Strait remains open and free from Iranian control.
Israel's
Intensified Offensive in Lebanon
- Mass Evacuation Orders: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF)
issued their largest evacuation warning yet for the ancient coastal city
of Tyre, forcing thousands of residents to flee immediately before
launching heavy airstrikes.
- 150+ Targets Hit: Israel expanded its air and
artillery operations to hit over 150 Hezbollah targets across southern
Lebanon, including the Bekaa Valley and historic UN heritage sites like
Beaufort Castle.
- Ground Advance: The IDF continues to deploy
heavy ground forces to fortify an expanded "security zone"
inside southern Lebanese territory.
- Rising Casualties: Lebanon’s health ministry
reports that more than 3,200 people have been killed and over 1.2 million
displaced since the current conflict intensified in March.
Diplomatic
Peace Talks in Jeopardy
The sudden
surge in violence has severely damaged ongoing, US-brokered peace negotiations
being hosted in Qatar. While draft proposals aimed at a total de-escalation
were briefly introduced, the White House labeled reports of an immediate US
military withdrawal a "total fabrication", and both sides remain
heavily locked in cross-border conflict.
