After
cancellation of auditorium, extremist group 'Reconquista' finds another place
for congress in Porto
The group
openly defends mass deportations of immigrants living in Portugal, in addition
to promoting discourses against women and the LGBTI+ community.

The
extremist group Reconquista, investigated by the Judiciary Police (PJ), has
already found another place to hold the annual congress. On the afternoon of
Friday, November 7, the Francisco de Assis Auditorium, in Porto, canceled the
reservation of the space for the event. The congress, which is in its third
edition, will bring together names such as Martin Sellner, leader of the
Identitarian Movement in Austria, and Frenchman Hilaire Bouyé, both defenders
of the mass deportation of immigrants, as well as the Reconquista in Portugal.
In a
video published around 19:00 pm on Telegram, leader Afonso Gonçalves said that
a new location for the meeting has already been found. "We have already
found an alternative space. The congress is going to take place!", he
wrote, accompanied by a video where he calls for the "massive
participation of everyone".
According
to Gonçalves, arrested several times for xenophobic insults against immigrants
and invasion of private property, the new address will be sent to those
registered only this Saturday. "For security reasons, the new location
will be sent by email tomorrow at 09:00 am to all those who have a
ticket," he explained in the message accompanying the video.
Upon
learning of the cancellation of the initial location, the leader of the
movement, which is in articulation with other similar European groups, said
that "there is no democracy in Portugal". The auditorium justified
the cancellation with the fact that it was a political event, "for not
respecting the regulations in force, which expressly prohibit it".
Earlier, Expresso reported that the Free party also had a request to reserve
the same auditorium refused for political reasons.
This is
not the first time that the Reconquista group has faced difficulties in holding
events. The second edition of the congress, in November last year, took place
at the headquarters of the Municipal Assembly. After the event, criticism arose
for the provision of the space, with the president claiming that she was
"deceived" about the meeting.
Later, he
clarified that the request had been made on behalf of the "youth of
Chega", something that, at the time, Afonso Gonçalves denied.
"Reconquista not only revealed the identity but also listed all the
speakers in emails exchanged with AM, and it was never mentioned that they were
from the party's youth," he said.
At the
same time, Reconquista maintains several links with André Ventura's party
group. In the last two elections, members of Reconquista participated in
electoral campaigns in favor of Chega. As DN revealed in a report in May 2024,
one of the objectives of these extremists is to "prepare the ground"
for Chega to adopt more radical positions, especially in the area of
immigration.
And, in
fact, they have succeeded. They were the first to talk about remigration, a
term that has now become common in Chega's discourse. It all started with
statements from members of the youth, such as Ricardo Reis (currently a member
of the party). Since the beginning of this year, Rita Matias and Pedro Frazão
have been publicly advocating for remigration.
At the
hearing of the Ministry of the Presidency on the State Budget for 2026 last
week, one of the topics addressed was immigration. Deputy Ricardo Reis
questioned Minister António Leitão Amaro about remigration. According to the
deputy, Portugal needs "not only to repatriate the illegals, but also
those who are here and do not comply, who do not deserve to be in this
country".
António
Leitão Amaro immediately rejected the idea, stating that the deputy's question
could only be used "for videos on social networks" and "for
national and international congresses" that discuss remigration, as is the
case with Reconquista. And Leitão Amaro was right: a few minutes after the
deputy's questions, the video was published on X (formerly Twitter). It was
also widely shared on far-right pages in Europe, reaching millions of views.
Another
connection of the party to Reconquista is Francisco Araújo, a frequent presence
at far-right events and debates, and also one of the speakers at the 2024
congress. Francisco Araújo was hired this year as a parliamentary advisor to
André Ventura's party and elected to the Municipal Assembly of Guimarães by
Chega.
On
Araújo's social networks there is no shortage of publications calling for
remigration. Pedro Pinto Faria, national councilor of Chega, responded to a
post by Afonso Gonçalves about remigration saying that he "fully agrees
with the premise".

O grupo
extremista Reconquista, investigado pela Polícia Judiciária (PJ), já encontrou
outro local para realizar o congresso anual. Na tarde desta sexta-feira, 7 de
novembro, o Auditório Francisco de Assis, no Porto, cancelou a reserva do
espaço para o evento. O congresso, que vai na terceira edição, reunirá nomes
como Martin Sellner, líder do Movimento Identitário da Áustria, e o francês
Hilaire Bouyé, ambos defensores da deportação em massa de imigrantes, tal como
a Reconquista em Portugal.
Num vídeo
publicado perto das 19h00 no Telegram, o líder Afonso Gonçalves afirmou que já
foi encontrado um novo local para o encontro. "Já arranjámos um espaço
alternativo. O congresso vai realizar-se!", escreveu, acompanhado de um
vídeo onde apela à participação "massiva de toda a gente".
Segundo
Gonçalves, detido várias vezes por insultos xenófobos contra imigrantes e
invasão de propriedade privada, a nova morada será enviada aos inscritos apenas
este sábado. "Por questões de segurança, o novo local será enviado por
e-mail amanhã às 09h00 da manhã a todos aqueles que têm bilhete", explicou
na mensagem que acompanha o vídeo.
Ao saber
do cancelamento do local inicial, o líder do movimento, que está em articulação
com outros grupos semelhantes europeus, afirmou que "não existe democracia
em Portugal". O auditório justificou o cancelamento com o facto de se
tratar de um evento de caráter político, "por não respeitar o regulamento
em vigor, que o proíbe expressamente". Mais cedo, o Expresso noticiou que
o partido Livre também teve um pedido de reserva do mesmo auditório recusado
por razões políticas.
Esta não
é a primeira vez que o grupo Reconquista enfrenta dificuldades na realização de
eventos. A segunda edição do congresso, em novembro do ano passado, decorreu na
sede da Assembleia Municipal. Depois do evento, surgiram críticas pela cedência
do espaço, com a presidente a afirmar que foi "enganada" sobre o
encontro.
Mais
tarde, esclareceu que o pedido havia sido feito em nome da "juventude do
Chega", algo que, na altura, Afonso Gonçalves negou. "A Reconquista
não só revelou a identidade como elencou todos os oradores em e-mails trocados
com a AM, e jamais foi referido que fosse da juventude do partido",
afirmou.
Ao mesmo
tempo, a Reconquista mantém várias ligações com o grupo partidário de André
Ventura. Nas duas últimas eleições, membros da Reconquista participaram em
campanhas eleitorais em favor do Chega. Tal como o DN revelou numa reportagem
em maio de 2024, um dos objetivos destes extremistas é "preparar o
terreno" para que o Chega adote posições mais radicais, sobretudo na área
da imigração.
E, de
facto, têm conseguido. Foram os primeiros a falar sobre remigração, termo que
agora se tornou comum no discurso do Chega. Tudo começou com declarações de
membros da juventude, como Ricardo Reis (atualmente deputado do partido). Desde
o início deste ano, Rita Matias e Pedro Frazão têm vindo a defender a
remigração publicamente.
Na
audição do Ministério da Presidência sobre o Orçamento do Estado para 2026 na
semana passada, um dos temas abordados foi a imigração. O deputado Ricardo Reis
questionou o ministro António Leitão Amaro sobre a remigração. Segundo o
deputado, Portugal precisa "não só de repatriar os ilegais, mas também
aqueles que cá estão e não cumprem, quem não merece estar neste país".
António
Leitão Amaro rejeitou de imediato a ideia, afirmando que a pergunta do deputado
poderia servir apenas "para vídeos nas redes sociais" e "para
congressos nacionais e internacionais" que discutem a remigração, como é o
caso da Reconquista. E Leitão Amaro tinha razão: poucos minutos depois das
perguntas do deputado, o vídeo foi publicado no X (antigo Twitter). Foi também
amplamente partilhado em páginas de extrema-direita da Europa, alcançando
milhões de visualizações.
Outra
ligação do partido à Reconquista é Francisco Araújo, presença frequente em
eventos e debates da extrema-direita, e também um dos oradores do congresso de
2024. Francisco Araújo foi contratado este ano como assessor parlamentar do
partido de André Ventura e eleito para a Assembleia Municipal de Guimarães pelo
Chega.
Nas redes
sociais de Araújo não faltam publicações a apelar à remigração. Pedro Pinto
Faria, conselheiro nacional do Chega, respondeu a um post de Afonso Gonçalves
sobre remigração dizendo que "concorda plenamente com a premissa".
