Agents

A man of
Portuguese nationality was shot this Wednesday, December 24, by agents of the
United States immigration services.
According
to Homeland Security, ICE agents were conducting an immigration enforcement
operation in Glen Burnie, Maryland, when they "identified the driver of a
van as Tiago Alexandre Sousa-Martins, an illegal immigrant from Portugal." who was accompanied by "Solomon Antonio
Serrano-Esquivel, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador."
The
agents approached the vehicle and ordered Sousa-Martins to turn off the engine.
However, the driver refused and tried to flee, having collided with several ICE
vehicles and tried to run over the officers, who were forced to shoot.
"Fearing
for their lives and public safety, ICE agents fired their service weapons in
self-defense, hitting the driver. Sousa-Martins then crashed the van between
two buildings, injuring the passenger," Homeland Security wrote on the
social network X.
After the
collision, officers "provided immediate aid to the driver and
passenger," who were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
"Both are in stable condition and should recover," it reads.
ICE
agents did not sustain serious injuries.
The
incident is still under investigation.
"Our
brave officers risk their lives every day to keep American communities safe by
arresting and removing illegal immigrants from our streets. Continued efforts
to encourage illegal immigrants and violent agitators to actively resist ICE
will only lead to more violent incidents; extremist rhetoric must stop,"
Homeland Security wrote.

Um homem
de nacionalidade portuguesa foi esta quarta-feira, 24 de dezembro, atingido a
tiro por agentes dos serviços de imigração dos Estados Unidos.
De acordo
com o Homeland Security [Departamento de Segurança dos Estados Unidos], os
agentes do ICE (Serviço de Imigração e Alfândega dos Estados Unidos) estavam a
realizar uma operação de fiscalização da imigração em Glen Burnie, no estado de
Maryland, quando "identificaram o condutor de uma carrinha como sendo
Tiago Alexandre Sousa-Martins, um imigrante ilegal oriundo de Portugal",
que estava acompanhado por "Solomon Antonio Serrano-Esquivel, um imigrante
ilegal de El Salvador".
Os
agentes aproximaram-se do veículo e ordenaram a Sousa-Martins que desligasse o
motor. No entanto, o condutor recusou e tentou fugir, tendo colidido com vários
veículos do ICE e tentou atropelar os agentes, que se viram obrigados a
disparar.
"Temendo
pelas suas vidas e pela segurança pública, os agentes do ICE dispararam as suas
armas de serviço em legítima defesa, atingindo o condutor. Sousa-Martins
embateu depois com a carrinha entre dois edifícios, ferindo o passageiro",
escreveu o Homeland Security na rede social X.
Após a
colisão, os agentes "prestaram socorro imediato ao condutor e ao
passageiro", que foram transportados para um hospital local para receber
tratamento. "Ambos estão em condição estável e deverão recuperar",
pode ler-se.
Os
agentes do ICE não sofreram ferimentos graves.
O
incidente ainda está sob investigação.
"Os
nossos bravos agentes arriscam as suas vidas diariamente para manter as
comunidades americanas seguras, prendendo e retirando os imigrantes ilegais das
nossas ruas. Os esforços contínuos para encorajar os imigrantes ilegais e os
agitadores violentos a resistirem ativamente ao ICE só conduzirão a mais
incidentes violentos; a retórica extremista tem de parar", escreveu o
Homeland Security.
